Strategies for Your Divorce ToolBox: Music
Music touches our soul and speaks to a different part of ourselves—outside of our cognition. It provides the space to be more contemplative and meditative while building hope, inspiration, and energy.
Given the power of music, it is important to think about what type of music is good for us at a given time. For example, music that evokes pain is often helpful when actively trying to open to the pain. The opposite is also true—music that evokes happiness is often helpful when we are want to lift our spirits. Music choices can change day-to-day depending on our needs.
In Lauren and my clinical practice, we have found that many people experiencing divorce discover different genres of music than they’ve been exposed to prior. With music so accessible through streaming, and other means, it is much easier to find music that resonates and calls to you.
Moreover, even without being schooled in music theory or knowledge of how to play an instrument, you can write music, including your own lyrics and tunes. As an additional means of expressing your current experience, this creative outlet is a wonderful way to help with your divorce recovery.
Music taps into a part of ourselves that is different from our usual awareness. It can activate a different part of the brain and touch a different part of our soul.
Our workshop at Kripalu integrates a musical component with co-presenter Bobby Sweet. We find that this component in conjunction with the other healing techniques is very powerful.
